Skills, Knowledge and Experience
I have been working in the aid and development sector in Southeast Asia and Oceania for over 25 years, and thus have gained a wide range of experience in the sector. including:

Research: I have been involved in planning, undertaking, and documenting a wide range of research studies, often with colleagues. Examples of past research work include:
-
A study on children out of school due to the Covid 19 pandemic in Indonesia;
-
Research into traditional beliefs and practices related to maternal nutrition and infant and young child feeding among Yao, Akha, Hmong, Tarieng and Katu ethic communities in the Lao PDR;
-
Preparation and production of an education sector background report for the (then) Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture;
-
Two research studies for Plan International, one into multigrade teaching and the other on cross-sectoral collaboration in education and health in northwestern Lao PDR;
-
Led a study in development of basic education in Cambodia, with a focus on support provided by Redd Barna over a decade.
Management: I have experience in most aspects of management from project level up to country level, so have developed a firm understanding of, among others, aspects related to technical, financial and HR support for aid and development projects. For example, I have worked in mid and upper level management with CIDSE Laos, Save the Children Australia and Save the Children UK. In addition, since 2008, I have managed my own small consulting company.

Education and training: Much of my experience in this sector has been mainly at basic education level (ECE, primary), but I have also worked on (and sometimes managed) tertiary and TVET level projects in both regions. This has involved program design, proposal development and planning, program and project evaluations, contribution to national policy development, teacher training, community involvement in education, post-graduate studies scholarships, and teaching of various courses at university level.

Community Health: This has included community health program evaluation, primary health care overall management, and HIV/AIDs education and treatment. I have conducted several evaluations funded by Danish and Swiss Red Cross into community health development at village community, district and provincial levels in the Lao PDR, Cambodia and Myanmar. While managing the country program for Save the Children Australia in the Lao PDR, I was responsible for overall management of a province-wide primary health care project.

Other: I have also implemented a large number of reviews and evaluations since becoming a consultant in 2008 – in fact, they have been a major part of my consulting work.
